3 Health & Safety Office Eileen Tully Health & Safety Officer x8896 Margaret Keegan Admin Support x8678 Location: HG256, School of Nursing Building Reporting To:DCU President (Part of EOLAS Group) Role: ‘To provide advice and assistance on all aspects of Health & Safety to all Schools/Units of DCU and in doing so maintain the University in good standing in relation to H&S legislative obligations and good practice’.

4 DCU H&S Responsibilities to Staff (4 x Ps) Safe Place –Access/egress, Fire detection systems, Housekeeping, Structures Safe Plant –Diagnostic Equipment, Autoclaves, Compressed gas systems, centrifuges etc.

5 DCU H&S Responsibilities The 4 x Ps cont/d Safe Procedures –Risk assessments, Biological Agents, Sharps handling & disposal, Manual handling etc. Safe People –Competent coworkers – Induction, Training, Supervision, Personal protective equipment

6 Employee Responsibilities Not to endanger himself / others by acts / omissions Not to be under influence of intoxicant as to be danger to self / others Comply with safety procedures – wear personal protective equipment Not to interfere with / misuse safety eqpt Attend training as specified by employer

8 The Overview DCU Framework Safety Statement –Arrangements for H&S Management –Specific Risks –DCU Policies School/ Unit local Safety Statement – specific to their activities –Head of School / School Safety Officer/ School Safety Coordinator –Based on specific risks within School

9 Fire / Emergency Procedure On hearing the Alarm –Leave the building IMMEDIATELY – If during lecture / lab, lead class out of building –Use nearest Fire Exit –Do not run / Do not use lift –Do not stop to collect personal belongings –Comply with instructions of Fire Wardens / Security –Assemble at nearest assembly point for the building –Do not reenter until given all clear

11 If You Cause / Discover a Fire Break Glass Units - operate the nearest unit if you discover a fire Notify Security 01 7005999 from place of safety Fire Extinguishers (Max 1) Fire Doors - keep them closed!

13 Accident / Emergency Whether Student or Staff – ensure appropriate treatment is sought & provided First Aid available within School/Unit & on Campus Call Security x5999 for Ambulance Assistance (or Dial 7999 direct) Complete DCU Accident Report Form & forward to H&S Office

14 First Aid Assistance First Aiders based in all buildings during office hours –Look for First Aid Box in foyer – listing of First Aid Personnel alongside DCU Security provide First Aid assistance after 5pm

16 Campus Wide H&S Manual Handling Training –In house trainers available –All new staff trained at induction Ergonomics Review –VDU Workstation Assessment –Group Training Pregnancy – Occupational Risk Assessment / Mothers’ Rest Room Emergency Planning Out of Hours policy H&S Helpline
