2 Learning Modules They may include: –Unit objectives –Lecturettes –Assignments, Problems –Projects, Case Studies, Group work –Quizzes –Web Links –ETC Help you organize materials into a teaching unit. In short, everything the student would need to complete in an on-ground unit.

3 Here’s how a learning module might look:

4 Creating a Learning Module: Learning Modules are created in the Build Tab From the Course Tools menu, select the Learning Modules link.

5 The Learning Module screen opens: Click Create Learning Module

6 A new screen opens: Fill in the blanks: History of Global Warming This unit examines the historical cycle of earth’s warming and cooling over the past 250,000 years. Select Show Item.

7 Complete the requested information: Select Numbering Option Select Table of Contents Display Select First page option But let’s Click Save! You can save this module name and create another!

8 A new learning module has been created:

9 From this screen: you can link the module to a page:

10 Click arrow to complete link:

11 You can also export or delete the module: Export creates a zip file in File Manager, Which can be imported into another course.

12 So far we’ve just created the “shell” for the module. Now it’s time to start filling it in!

13 Click on the Module:

14 New module is blank: We’ll use the buttons to create the module content

15 Let’s add a file: Click the Add File Button

16 We’ll add an introduction that we have already created for this unit: From the dropdown menu, click Browse for Files (Note that you can also create a file here.)

17 The Get Files screen appears: Select the introduction file, and click OK

18 The file is added to the module:

19 Let’s Add a Content Link: Click Add Content Link button or action link

20 The dropdown list appears: View the list of possibilities

21 Let’s add a web link:

22 The inventory opens: (Note that you can Create a Web Link from this screen.)

23 Select the link: Click Add Selected

24 The link appears in the module:

25 You can add an assignment link as well:

26 Select and Add Assignment

27 The assignment appears in the Learning Module:

28 Let’s Add a Discussion:

29 Select the discussion from the list: A direct link from the module to the discussion topic will be created.

30 Discussion has been added to the Module: Students will be able to link directly to the Discussion from this module.

31 Add an Assessment:

32 Select the Unit 1 quiz:

33 The quiz is added to the module:

34 Each item added has its own action link menu: This menu gives you additional options

35 Note the option buttons below items: You can select an item and indent it, outdent it, remove it.

36 You can also change the order of the links: Select an item Then use the Move column to select new position.

37 Let’s look at other control buttons: Click Action Menu Settings

38 In Student View.... The action menu displays these links:

39 To Add Action Menu Links: Click the Actions plus sign for each item to create a menu link. Indicates an Action Menu link

40 Add Goals WebCT has a special place for unit goals:

41 A new screen appears: This unit will review the milestones in earth’s global warming. Students will learn: The timeline for interglacial periods; warming and cooling cycles.... You can add the unit objectives here

42 In Build tab, you can view Goals:

43 In student view, goals are now added to the Action menu:

44 The Action Menu options also lets you remove icons: Note that browse control Buttons cannot be removed

45 When selections are complete: Click “Done”

46 Let’s look at other options:The Module Action Link The Action link is a “short cut” to many of the same menus we have already seen.

47 Additional options include: Preview file– Opens Student View in a new browser window.

48 View Links: Lets you see the path from the file to the page where it is linked.

49 Set Release Criteria: This menu lets you set the dates module is available to students, Add members to view the unit, add groups, and set up gradebook.

50 Note: You do not have to Add Criteria to your learning module. If you do not add criteria, the module will simply appear on the content page you have selected, available to all students at any time. Add Criteria allows you to make the module available on a limited basis, to restrict access to the module according to your specifications.

51 When module is released: Student is notified on MyWebCT page of pending assignments, quizzes, etc. contained in the module

52 Congratulations! Your module is ready for prime time!

53 Note: Modules may also be constructed starting from the homepage! Click Add Content Link button Select Learning Module You can add or construct the LM from this location as well.

54 This concludes the learning module session!

55 First, we’ll add a heading: Click the Create Heading button

56 The dialog box appears: Fill in a title for the module. Click Save History of Global Warming

57 The heading appears in the learning module:
