3 Nuremburg Trials Took Place at Nuremburg, Germany 1945-1950 This is where tried Nazi Leaders 22 Culprits tried Crimes against humanity War Violating peace treaties Justice was Harsh 7 sentenced to long jail terms 12 accused Nazi hung from gallows One swallowed cyanided before hung America mad at lynching because not clear cut war crimes

4 America’s Views on Germany Beyond punishing top Nazi couldn’t figure out what to do with Germany Some Americans noted, industrial Germany was a brutal aggressor wanted to dismantle factories Still America saw importance for a viable Germany Economy Whereas…

5 Russia’s Views on Germany Soviets did not want Americas aid but determined to rebuild Shattered Russia Soviets wanted to extract Germany’s resources for own- Massive Reparations Views starting to clash Russia fear another blitzkrieg and heavily resisted Germany’s revitalization

6 Splitting of Germany Austria and Germany split into 4 military occupied zones Four Zones were Russia, France, Britain, and The United States Western allies refused Russia to bleed their zone of reparations (Stalin insisted been promised) Allies also wanted reunited Germany Communist responded by tightening grip on Eastern zone Apparent Germany would remain divided West Germany becomes independent but wedded to west East Germany becomes nominally independent bound to the east
