1 Welcome Quality Journey of Baskent University Mithat Coruh M. D.

2 Introduction Turkish education system is based on mainly didactic instruction. Students were presented to the universities without prior instruction on design, planning and with lack of practice and experience. Baskent University’s top management have realized, and studied this problem, and decided to improve higher education system in the university o Evaluate teaching/practicing programs, including internal assessment, external review, participation of students. o Improve curriculum and teaching/training modalities to prepare students for international competitive field.

3 Searching Baskent University Quality Management Center, searches and studies the world trend in education and training, analyze and filter these information to improve quality management knowledge/practices of students’ at pre-service periods, and to disseminate gained experience with educational institutions of the university.

4 Background of our “Quality Journey” o Baskent University’s “Quality” journey has started with the foundation of the university back in 1993 (Training of the health and educational staff on ISO 9001:1994 standards). o ISO 9001:1994 certification was received: o In health services” in 1997, and then on o In higher education” in 1998, Both certifications were limited to the administrative end of the university’s health and education institutions.

5 “Customer end” implementations o In 2000, student based Quality Management education and training sessions have commenced. o The initial teachings were “per request” based at MBA level. o In 2001, with the formal request of Nursing and Health Services Department, a quality “awareness” program was started. o Teaching and learning activities have continued with seminar sessions in various training/education departments per request.

6 Dissemination of QMS Activities o In 2006 Tourism and Management Departments initiated QMS training program. o In the same year, a quality certificate “pilot” program was instituted at Nursing and Health Services Departments’ fourth year students.

7 Student Feedback on Quality At the end of each semester quality instructors get students’ feedback in order to improve themselves, the system and the education. Here are some of the results we obtained from the students, on “quality” instruction.

8 Some of the Feedback we received I don’t think it is sufficient to have this seminar with just one hour a week. It should be a separated entirely and be a separate course. Quality Management System and the process was taught efficiently and was very helpful. 1 hour simply isn’t enough. It should be more in detail. It is more exciting then my other courses. I think the subjects taught in this course are very important but the time is limited This course teaches us the importance of quality in our lives.

11 Dissemination of Quality Management System Within Academic Teaching/Training Institutions and Quality Management Certification Traning In 2007, Baskent University’s senate has decided to integrate QMS teaching/training courses to each departments’ curriculum. Within this scope 2007-2008 Academic year, first two credited courses (one in Management (ISLE-477), and one in Nursing and Health Services (HSHB-309) integrated to the programs of these two departments. Quality Management Center (MÇKYM) believe that this initiative may continuously improve education and produce more able students for international competitive field.

12 Resources 1/2  ISO 9001: 1994; Responsiblity and authority distribution in organization management, internal and extarnal audit, corrective and preventitive activities, problem solving methods, tools and tecnique standards..  JCAHO; Focusing on patient, health organization and foundation functions, patient care outputs, performance measurements, clinical management and continous improvement of supportive services.

13 Resources 2/2 Baldridge International Quality Program; Leadership, strategic planning, focusing on customer and stakeholders, focusing on instructors and management personell, process management and standards/implementation approaches of organizational performance. And applied it to our existing quality data and formulated a functional Turkish Quality Management System program.
