2 What are things that stress you out? QOD # 2

3 Stress test Add up the scores for the stress values of the events on the worksheet

4 Stress Stress- the combination of a new and possibly threatening situation and your body’s natural response to the situation Stressor- anything that causes a stress response, can be pleasant or unpleasant

5 2 types of stress Distress- the negative physical, mental, or emotional strain in response to a stressor. Distress can make you sick or interfere with your life Eustress- the positive stress response that happens when winning, succeeding, and achieving.

6 Common stressors for teens Arguing with a sibling, parent, or friend Moving to a new house or new school Getting glasses or braces Being picked as the lead in a school play Being injured or sick Worrying about appearance Worrying about a sick family member

7 Teen stressors cont… Starting to date Trying out for a sports team Experiencing the death of a pet Being suspended from school Death of a family member Having a newborn brother or sister Parents divorcing Starting to use drugs, tobacco, or alcohol

8 Short-term effects of stress Dry mouth Nausea Muscles tighten Vision and hearing sharpen Body prepares for “fight or flight response” (stress response)

9 Long-term effects of stress Brain- anxiety disorders or depression Heart- heart disease and heart attacks Circulatory system- high blood pressure and coronary artery disease Immune system- increased risk of infection and disease Digestive system- digestive problems, such as diarrhea, constipation, cramps, abdominal bloating, and ulcers

10 Long-term effects cont… Skin- acne, hives, psoriasis, and eczema Weight- loss of appetite and weight, cravings for comfort foods, which can lead to weight gain Other- diabetes, chronic pain, and sleep disorders

11 Stress management Relaxation- 1. relax your muscles starting at your toes and working your way up 2. slow your breathing by inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth 3. get enough sleep Keep a positive outlook- 1. think positively

12 Stress Management 2. Keep your sense of humor 3. Have some fun Physical activity- Learn good time management skills

13 Homework Assignment- Due Mon Total your stress points… answer the question at the bottom In first paragraph, describe at least 3 of your stressors, if not on sheet, choose 3 Describe in 2 nd paragraph how your stressors or stress level is affecting your health In 3rd paragraph, describe some positive ways that you can manage your stress… try to be specific to your stressors.
