Order of Operations Alfredo Perez Resident Mathematician Oakwood Intermediate Texas A&M University GK-12 Program

Why Follow a Specific Order? Think about the order of events you would follow at a gas station:

Not Following the Correct Order?

Order of Operations The mathematical rules that determine the correct order for solving any sequence of math operations Who solved it right?

How to Remember the Right Order to Follow ARENTHESISARENTHESIS XPONENTSXPONENTS ULTIPLICATIONULTIPLICATION IVISIONIVISION DDITIONDDITION UBTRACTIONUBTRACTION PEMDAS LEASE XCUSE Y EAR UNT ALLY if any operation repeats more than once: Solve from left to right ! Don’t forget!

Warm Up Exercise ( 8 – 6 / 2 + 4 2 ) x 3 ( 8 – 6 / 2 + 4 2 ) PEMDAS Solve for operations within the parenthesis first 4 2 = 4x4 = 16 PEMDAS Do exponent first 6/2 = 3 PEMDAS Division next There is subtraction, division, addition, and an exponent 8 + 16 = 24 PEMDAS Do addition first 24 – 3 = 21 PEMDAS Subtraction next ( 21 ) x 3 = 63 Final step is to multiply PEMDAS ( 8 – 3 + 16 ) Substitute back into the parenthesis

Activity You must interpret every step we follow in this activity as one of the six operations P, E, M, D, A or S Write down the expression for each step we show using simple math Evaluate your final expression following the correct order of operations Arrive to the right answer and you will get a small PRIZE!

Are you ready? Lets begin!
