1 Order of Operations

2 Order of Operations Definitions:
Numerical Expression – Is a mathematical phrase that includes only numbers and operations. Examples: ÷ 2 and Simplify – Refers to the process of finding the value of numerical/algebraic expressions or writing a fraction in simplest form. Order of Operations – Is the set of rules that mathematicians have agreed on to simplify numerical expressions that involve more than one operation.

3 Order of Operations 1.) Simplify any expressions inside grouping symbols (parentheses and brackets). 2.) Evaluate any numbers with exponents. 3.) Multiply or divide from left to right. 4.) Add or subtract from left to right.

4 Order of Operations Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations
Example 1: x 2 9 + 24 33 Multiply the 12 and the 2. Add the 9 and the 24. Final answer

5 Order of Operations Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations
Example 2: 7 + (12 x 3) ÷ 6 + 4 ÷ 6 + 4 13 + 4 17 Multiply the 12 and the 3. Divide the 36 and the 6. Add the 7 and the 6. Add 13 and 4. Final answer

6 Order of Operations Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations
Example 3: ÷ 4 – 16÷ 4 – 16÷ 4 – 4 35 – 4 31 Raise 3 to the 3rd power. Divide 16 by 4. Add the 27 and the 8. Subtract the 4 from 35. Final answer

7 Order of Operations Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations
Try these: 1.) 28 – 63  7 = 2.) ÷ (5 – 2) 3.) 5 x [36 – (13 + 9)] = 4.) 8 ÷ (1 + 3) x 52 – 2 =

8 Order of Operations Adding Parentheses
Add one set of parentheses so that each math statement is correct. 1.) ÷ 4 = 7 2.) 50 ÷ – 7 = 3
