1 GUYING AND STAKING TREES

2 Topic Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to:
Diagnose problems and select the appropriate care for guying and staking trees. Demonstrate the proper usage of protective paints and understand reasons for applying it. Develop a plan, including the selection of proper tools, to correctly guy and stake a tree.

3 Special Materials and Equipment:
Stakes, sledge hammer, axe, eyescrews, garden hose pieces, wire, knife, pliers, landscape specifications, guy wires, trees, turnbuckles, lever--steel rod, or handle, knife, wound compound, pruning saw, wooden paddle, chisel, mallet, *continued on next slide

4 Special Materials and Equipment (continued):
asphalt emulsion, spray paints, spatula or wooden paddle, white wash, sprayer, detergent, water, destructive insects, insecticides, sprayer, water, volume measuring device, detergent, control recommendations, tree wrap, tree, twine, knife, wheelbarrow, brush.

5 Staking Trees Observe wind direction.
Develop aesthetic sense of stake placement-placed so not to be distracting. 3. Select method of staking when not dictated. 4. Sharpen and drive stakes. 5. Stake and guy trees, using appropriate data and knowledge to allow for optimum support.

6 Tree Protection 1. Determine function of protective hoses and eyescrews. 2. Cut hose to fit specific plant. 3. Place eyescrews in trunk. 4. Select hose or eyescrews method. 5. Attach wires to turnbuckles to tighten wires.

7 Repair Guy Wires 1. Attach wires to turnbuckles and used turnbuckle to tighten wires. 2. Use double wire and used twist to tighten guy wires.

8 Diagnose Wound 1. Diagnose wound and select type of repair needed.
2. Shape wound and clean. 3. Apply wound compound.

9 Protective Paints 1. Determine need for protective paints, and understand reasons for applying protective paint. 2. Mix white wash solution. 3. Apply method for each compound, and selected correct measure to suit problem. 4. Clean sprayer and equipment.

10 Insect Control 1. Identify destructive insects and selected appropriate control methods. 2. Mix insecticide solution. 3. Measure wettable powders. 4. Measure emulsifiable concentrate. 5. Apply the insecticide. 6. Clean application equipment.

11 Tree Wrapping 1. Recognize the need for tree wrapping.
2. Select correct size of tree wrap. 3. Fasten and begin the wrapping operation. 4. Wrap the trunk and end the wrapping operation. 5. Use twine to fasten.

12 Clean Up 1. Pick up debris. 2. Sweep grass where needed.
3. Wash tools, dry and oil moving parts. 4. Put items back into appropriate places. 5. Clean work area and tools, using appropriate methods, to maintain appearance and operating condition

1. Locate trees in your area that need staking. 2. Identify what could happen if staking did not occur.
