P1 Presentations General guidelines: 10 minutes long, maximum 5-6 slides or the equivalent Visually supported by examples from your shadowing project Addressed to your peers as fellow researchers Good presenters will: Briefly summarize who they shadowed and what project(s) they investigated Move quickly to connect interesting findings to course concepts Highlight issues, examples that make their case interesting Conclude with implications of their findings for the audience

Need Statements “The Need Statement is a succinct and persuasive presentation of facts and evidence that describe a problem and support the need for a project.” Mikelonis, et. al. p. 36 Need statements, in various forms, are incorporated into many genres during the proposing process. They might find their way into: The proposal itself An initial conversation with members of the sponsoring organization A presentation delivered with the written proposal

Need Statements: 3 parts 1.Description of the problem 2.Plan for solving the problem 3.Request for support (aka, “instrumental purpose”) Line of argument “Here’s a problem that our organization is facing and here’s why we need to address this problem now. We suggest the following plan for solving the problem. We seek your approval and your support in X,Y,and Z form in order to achieve.

8. Try It: Draft a P2 Need Statement 1.Limit it to 200 wds. 2.Think of it as an all-purpose document that will be used in a variety of ways throughout your project. 3.Use it to test the scope of your idea. Post it on your project page
