Open Networks - Session I Introduction to Open Networks and WLPR.NET Matti Juutilainen Matti.Juutilainen@lut.fi Lappeenranta University of Technology Communications Engineering

Agenda The evolution of wireless LANs WLAN network models & comparison Wireless Lappeenranta network model WLpr.net Influences of open networks Conclusions

The Evolution of Wireless LANs + manageable, easy planning – high building costs, interference – closed, limited possibilities – roaming requires co-operation Internet Company Intranet Closed Access Network Company ISP Closed Access Network ISP network Wireless ISP network

The Evolution of Wireless LANs + likely to spread, lots of users + shared building costs + public, wide possibilities (users, services, …) + easy roaming – hard to manage – difficult to plan (access point locations) – coverage area – Internet-access? Internet ISP Community Network Community network

The Evolution of Wireless LANs Open Access Network Company Intranet Internet Company ISP Operator Interface Lappeenranta Model + manageable, easy planning + low building costs, less interference + public, wide possibilities + easy roaming + lots of users + local services – complex user routing and authentication Public multi-ISP network

Influences of Open Networks Local influence Influence on –Internet Service Providers (ISPs) –Service providers –End users –City and the local area –Network manager

Conclusions WLAN networks are affordable and popular for the last mile. WLAN technology is not yet mature –Need for speed, reliability, security, range, lower costs, interoperability, QoS etc. Also other competing/supporting wired network technologies (Fiber, Ethernet, …) New network models are emerging –Community networks –Public multi-ISP networks Demand for public and affordable local networks.

Conclusions Commercial usability is vital. Different network options: –Commercial single-ISP networks Advantageous only for the ISPs? –Community networks (Seattle Wireless etc.) Commercial usability/reliability? –Public access systems StockholmOpen.net Wireless Lappeenranta HelsinkiOpen.net Regional networks In practice, most of the networks are a combination of previous options.

Conclusions Publicity will be in a key role –Public access networks will be strong. –Publicity offers new opportunities for everyone Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Service providers End users Neutral network manager City and the local area Need for services and content!
