3. Interoperability Traditional sensors  Proprietary protocol (Johnson control, Honeywell, etc).  Difficult to interface a sensor product to other products. Interoperability through standardization  Zigbee standard specifies the profiles for sensors like lighting, HVAC, etc.  Interoperability means more opportunity for a sensor manufacturer, especially, a small manufacturer.  IEEE 1451 (Smart Sensor) – plug and play for sensor.

4. Different sensor network types depending on power usage. Type 1: power consumption is not an issue  All the nodes are connected to power outlet.  Example: Fab monitoring (Intel) Type 2: every node is worried about power  All the nodes are running on battery power.  Example: Great Duck Island (UCB) Type 3: Two-tier architecture.  Tier 1 – Connected to the power outlet. Forwarder node.  Tier 2 – Leaf nodes running on battery. Concerned about power consumption.  Building control belongs to type 3.
