1 PANEL SKILLS The DO’s and DON’Ts

2 BASIC THINGS TO REMEMBER Panels are really important because often they are the first exposure to UVM students. When on a panel, make sure the questions are answered thoroughly and accurately. Make sure to be on time, enthusiastic and pleasant! Panels are used for Group Information Sessions (GIS) and open houses in the fall & spring

3 Introductions Name Year in school Hometown and State College, Major, and minor (if applicable) 2 ACTIVITIES!!! It is very easy to talk about all the things you do on campus but limit it to 2. Why you decided to come to UVM KEEP IT AS BRIEF AS POSSIBLE!!!

4 Moderating Introduce yourself first and then have people on panel introduce themselves down the line Encourage students to ask questions first and then parents Repeat the question and make sure to clarify the question for the audience & panel Make sure all the panelists have opportunity to answer questions Be aware of the length in time of the GIS Everyone should try moderating after being on a few panels

5 PANEL DO’s Keep a positive attitude. Be attentive to the audience as well as what other panelist are saying. Use appropriate language and grammar. Talk about your personal experiences as well as UVM as a whole. Be articulate, speak clearly and loudly. Let the moderator direct the questions, and keep things going. Offer to take questions from the moderator. Make sure to take the initiative. Make sure to be involved with the panel so that everyone has equal opportunity to answer questions. Be sure to balance honesty with positive images of UVM.

6 PANEL DON’Ts Don’t use a lot of slang words – sound professional. Don’t use acronyms (SGA, VIA, etc) Don’t talk around the question – make sure to answer what they are asking. Don’t lean on the chairs, wall, etc. – stand up and look presentable. Don’t do things that may distract the audience or the other panelists. Don’t hog the questions. Don’t ramble or mumble. Don’t do things like eat, chew gum, etc.

7 PANEL OVERVIEW Be professional Answer the questions Balance fact and personal experience When not on panel, make sure to be respectful and quiet.
