2 The following “shall not appear” in moving pictures (1927) Profanity Licentious or suggestive nudity, in fact or silhouette Illegal traffic in drugs Sex perversion, miscegenation, scenes of childbirth Ridicule of the clergy Willful offence to any nation, race or creed

3 “Be Careful” list Firearms, theft, robbery, brutality, and murder (including techniques) Sympathy for criminals Apparent cruelty to children or animals Women selling their virtue Man and woman in bed together Excessive or lustful kissing

4 1930 Code (excerpts) No siding with evil against good. Adultery cannot be the subject of comedy. Scenes of passion must not be explicit and should not occur when not essential to the plot. “Impure love” must not be presented as attractive. Nudity is never permitted; dancing must not be indecent; brothels cannot be shown; and bedrooms can only be shown with care Dancing cannot be indecent or sexual.

5 Crime Brutal killings are not to be presented in detail. Revenge cannot be not justified. Methods of crime cannot be shown. Law and justice must not be made to seem wrong or ridiculous. Criminals cannot be presented as heroic.
