3 Group Exercise (10 minutes work + 10 answering to class) uTo what extent are you guided by emotional impulses and considerations on an ordinary day, as opposed to cold, logical thinking about things? uTo what extent is such guidance a good thing or a bad thing? uNOTE: Consider other people's emotions as well as your own.

5 Some Possible Meanings (of the phrase in isolation, at least) uBe cautious, you might harm a child. uBe cautious, a child might harm you! uChildren, be cautious. uCaution some children, please. uThis locker (say) is for the children of the Caution family. uThese are the children who have been cautioned. uThese are the children who have done some cautioning. uThese are the children who are “a caution.”

6 Individual Exercise (10 minutes) uMuch as we did with my example "CAUTION CHILDREN", list possible meanings of the phrase "SMOKE FREE ZONE". Be careful to consider the different parts of speech (noun, verb, etc.) that the three words may be.

8 Individual Exercise 2 (10 minutes) uConsider the following passage: Mike waved down a taxi. When he got to the airport, he found he only had Euros in his wallet. uPlease do the following. l In up to about 100 words describe fully one plausible scenario for what happened, filling in gaps left open by the passage. l List 10 pieces of general knowledge about the world that would be useful in understanding the situation.
