4 Open DEI 2009 Peer review 4 Overall the Department is excellent. It is one of the strongest in Italy, competitive with leading institutions in Europe and in many aspects competitive internationally, with some examples of world-leading work. The Department is particularly strong in conducting rigorous engineering and application driven research. The panel was very impressed with the productivity and quality of the research activities, especially under the constraints of limited resources such as limited national funding opportunities, limit on PhD numbers and relatively high teaching loads. It has good industrial contacts and collaborations.
