IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee IELM215 Manufacturing Processes I.Introduction & Course Organization

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Introduction IELM 215 This is the only hard core engineering course for IELM Based on the feedback of the alumni, this course is very useful and important for many students who become engineers or managers: Quality Design & Production for toys or electronics industries

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Issues of IELM 215 As one can see, the text book is over 1000 pages long and it covers a lot of materials It is intended for a one year course It is intended for more hard cored engineers The original intention of the course is for manufacturing processes or on the process of how to makes things – the focus is a bit narrow to suit most of your career

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 Therefore the course has been reorganized to fit your needs: While we are still keeping all the hard cored manufacturing processes material, we have broadened the perspective of the course This course is based on the perspective between a manager and manufacturing engineer

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 cont. There is a difference in perspective between a production worker/operator and a manager/engineer Operators are more concerned with how to operate and use the machines and process Manager are more concerned of how to improve cost, quality and time to market

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 cont. To know how to improve cost, quality and time to market, we will ask a very set of questions: Is this the best way to manufacturing this product? To answer it, we need to understand is it a best design, best material and best process

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 cont. We need the comparative pro and con of each processes, each type of material etc. Also we need to know how to measure the finish products to ensure indeed they are good quality Therefore in this course we will 1. Look at how design, material and process affect cost etc. 2. Then we will look at mechanical manufacturing process

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 cont. Also we need to know how to measure the finish products to ensure indeed they are good quality Therefore in this course we will 1. Look at how design, material and process affect cost etc. 2. Then we will look at mechanical manufacturing process – start from low cost near neat shape and lowest cost material then work ourselves upward

IELM, HKUST Prof Neville Lee Course organization of IELM 215 cont. 3. Then will teach coating/ electronics manufacturing 4. Finally we will teach metrology, analysis and instrumentation 5. In addition, in our lab, we will teach: Reverse Engineering CAM Low cost molding technique
