USSR – US Cold War Songs We are now going to listen to two songs from the Cold War Era. Chuck Berry’s “Back in the U.S.A.” The Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” As you listen to the songs, follow along with the lyrics and be ready to discuss some questions.

Chuck Berry: “Back in the U.S.A.” 1.How does Berry portray America? 2.Why would he be so happy to live in the U.S.A?

The Beatles: “Back in the U.S.S.R.” 1.This song was meant to be extremely sarcastic. Where is the irony in a British band singing about going back to the U.S.S.R? 2.How do the Beatles portray the U.S.S.R? 3.Why do you think people responded so negatively to this song?

Superpowers loosing power By the late 1970’s, the division of the world into two blocs (lead by superpowers) were coming to an end. The U.S. became cautious of military involvements from protest at home. Western Europe and Japan became less dependent on the United States and began developing their own markets/economies. The Soviet Union was facing internal pressures for change and their economy was failing. Finally, smaller nations were following their own paths of development and independence. All of these events marked the move away from a world dominated by the superpowers.

Satellite States Achieve Independence For most of the Cold War, the Soviet Union maintained tight control over its satellite nations. The peoples of these nations resented Soviet domination, but were largely powerless against Soviet troops. In each satellite country, there is a struggle to regain their freedom and independence.

Satellite States Achieve Independence To learn more about satellite states’ struggle for independence, you are going to create a graffiti board. You will be broken up into seven groups. Each group will be given a different country to read about (Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, and USSR) After you read about their struggle for independence you will create a poster that addresses the important information. Your poster should include facts, dates, drawings, and most importantly – how did your country obtain independence? When all posters are finished, you will present them to the class and they will take notes, so make sure you understand the information and are able to explain it!

Miracle In 1980 the Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, NY. This was during the height of the Cold War and bad US- Soviet relations. At the time, the Soviet Union had the best hockey team in the world. (Won every Olympics since 1964) The U.S. team was made up of amateur collegiate players, but they managed to make it to the finals. Soviet Union and United States engaged in a duel for the gold medal. But the duel was not just to obtain gold, the countries used it as another way to prove their dominance over one another. Both felt that a loss would prove them the weaker nation. Considered one of the greatest moments in sports history.
