5. What was the climate at UMass? Highly respected Center for Teaching Formal awards and recognition for teaching Strong, visible Teaching and Learning communities Faculty who succeed on research terms with teaching innovation programs Active working relationship between School of Education, and arts and sciences colleges

6. Assessing your climate Identified communities? Formal recongition of success? Center for Teaching or equivalent? Institutional spirit? Other positive factors? Roadblocks?

7. New challenges Wave of retirements Scrutiny of teaching productivity, but, some of the changes made over the last decade have become mainstream.

8. What did I do as Dean of Sciences and Math? Kept teaching on the agenda Showed my respect for teaching innovation Encouraged isolated groups to work together Spent a little money, and encouraged the Provost to spend more. Made myself better informed.

9. Working your Dean Invite her to meetings. Be clear about your goals. Make sure she knows about your successes. Ask for what you need. Don’t be put off if you don’t get what you want. Build coalitions.
