1 Joe Camel … and the stick that broke the camels back

2 JOE CAMEL - Used as a spokesperson for Camel Cigarettes - Originally designed in the 1950’s by an unknown French art director. -Lasted from 1987 to 1997 - Appeared in animated television advertisements before 1987 - In 1991 more 5 and 6 year olds could recognize Joe Camel over Mickey Mouse - The snout of Joe Camel can be seen as a penis and scrotum. Some believe this is for subliminal advertising

3 Today Joe Camel is no more. RJ Reynolds voluntarily dismissed Joe as their mascot in 1997, after pressure from Congress and the American public. RJ Reynolds stated that they never meant to target kids with their ads. Through the years Joe Camel (or parodies of him) has appeared in many popular shows including Futurama (himself), South Park (Camel Joe), and The Simpsons (Menthol Moose). Joe Camels image is now being used as an anti-smoking campaign. What once started as a simple advertising gimmick, has now turned into nothing more than a popular culture reference.
