Some believe this is for subliminal advertising

3. Today Joe Camel is no more. RJ Reynolds voluntarily dismissed Joe as their mascot in 1997, after pressure from Congress and the American public. RJ Reynolds stated that they never meant to target kids with their ads. Through the years Joe Camel (or parodies of him) has appeared in many popular shows including Futurama (himself), South Park (Camel Joe), and The Simpsons (Menthol Moose). Joe Camels image is now being used as an anti-smoking campaign. What once started as a simple advertising gimmick, has now turned into nothing more than a popular culture reference.
