FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY ENDURE-Network of Excellence - June 2008

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY Societal expectations for safe food and environmentally friendly agriculture Area 5.4.6 - Safer and environmentally friendly production methods and technologies and healthier food stuffs. Topic 1 - Reducing the use of plant protection products. EC Contribution 11,2 M € End-users (farmers & advisers) + industry, policy-makers, society at large… European Network for DURable Exploitation of crop protection strategies Crop protection: fragmented scientific knowledge and R&D community

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY Project structure 4 Integrating Themes Take stock of and inform plant protection policy changes: ENDURE will provide scientific support to policy makers. Spreading Activities POLICY Build a lasting crop protection community of research: Create a coherent research strategy, Develop the Network internal structure, and Develop links with scientific community Research, Integration and Spreading Activities LONG TERM Provide end-users a broader range of short-term solutions to specific problems: Allow farmers to respond to the new demands while maintaining competitiveness. Research and Spreading Activities SHORT TERM Develop a holistic approach to sustainable pest management: In the long-term, optimising existing systems. Research Activities SYSTEM

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY 2 – SYSTEM Consider pests altogether Combine methods with partial effects Elaborate strategies at large time and space scales Consider interactions between crop protection, agronomy, ecological, landscape factors… and the socio-economic framework Based on « system case studies » ORCHARD (Space scale) ARABLE CROP ROTATIONS (Time scale)

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY 3 – RESEARCH COMMUNITY Build an integrated and sustainable research community Supported by research tools built by the Network: –The Virtual Laboratory (Infrastructure of the Network) –Human Ressource Exchange (to promote knowledge exchange) –Crop Protection Network (to interact with other projects and networks) –Endure-Information Centre (a European-level point of reference for recommendations and advice) Also supported by a common Research Agenda among Partners, identifying gaps in current knowledge and harmonising research programmes to cover unaddressed issues: –Long-term research priorities are being defined through a foresight study examining how European crop protection might shape up in 2030

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY 4 – POLICY Water framework directive revision of 91/414 on registration proposed framework directive on use phase waste framework directive regulation on Min. residue levels Within a European policy environment conducive to change, ENDURE can contribute to national-level implementation of IPM called for by the proposed Framework Directive By Jan. 1, 2014, Member States will have to demonstrate that they have implemented the FD (including this article). In this context, ENDURE proposes to explore with policy makers the drivers and challenges to changing practices in conventional farming.

FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY State-of-progress after 17 months - 01/01/2007 to 31/05/2008

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY Results achieved after 17 Months Integration of the Network –De-fragmentation of European Research:  A fragmentation analysis of partners’ research have been made and the foresight study has been launched and will soon produced scenarios for the future of crop protection;  Cross-linking with networks and projects through the CPN has started;  Network durability: an inventory of possible funding sources and legal structures has been made; –Virtual Lab implementation:  The inventory of facilities is finished and the inventory of resources is starting;  The VL will take example from a finished project (EUROBLIGHT) to build up the same kind of services: starting with a EUROWHEAT platform. –Mobility:  An information and assistance framework to facilitate internal mobility has been set up;  The first call for external mobility for INCO countries has been launched. –Integrated knowledge Management:  A general structure for databases in ENDURE has been defined  a Common server for all databases has been set up;  An internal communication system has been installed since 8 th March 2007  Collaborative workspace.

© ENDURE, February 2007 FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY Results achieved after 17 Months Research Activities  Identification and assessment of ready-to-transfer strategies to optimise and reduce pesticide use has been made through Case Studies;  First results of the ending Case Studies will be published to end-users through Leaflets of good practices;  Special care is taken to Integration in Research activities. Dissemination Activities –Training and Education  Key topics for a joint training programme for ENDURE research staff have been identified;  A first Summer School has been made in 2007, (next one in 2009)  A PhD Network is being implemented to enhance integration of PhDs. –External communication  The public web-site is online, the Communication Team has been gathered and a Web- Editor has been hired to enhanced Network Communication;  First contacts with INCO countries have been made (1st meeting in June);  The first ENDURE International Conference will take place in La Grande Motte on 13 th -17 th October 2008. –ENDURE Information Centre  A prototype of ENDURE Information Centre has been created to provide end-users with experts validated knowledge (first public demonstration is planned in September).
