2 How To: PLTW Engineering Programs Partnering with Community Colleges
Why should a community college engage with PLTW-E High School? PLTW has a proven track record of success in promoting courses in STEM subjects. PLTW, a new paradigm for recruiting students into Career and Technical Education programs. Eligible to apply for Career Pathway Grants. PLTW students persist – the most important of all!

3 How To: PLTW Engineering Programs Partnering with Community Colleges
Why should a PLTW-E High School engage with a community college? College credit (articulation or concurrent enrollment). Increased funding opportunities SB70 ( ), SB 1070 (current) AB86 Career Pathway Trusts ( ) DWM – Doing What Matters (sector navigators, AME, AT, Ag, BMS, SBDC, ICT ) Additional industry partners.

4 Are There Successful Models in Place? The El Camino College Model
2003 Advisors to Hawthorne Engineering Academy 2004 Attempt to match PLTW to existing courses 2005 Developed 5 college level PLTW courses 2006 Began offering PLTW courses 2007 to 2009, sponsored 7 high schools 2008 Engineering Technology Program Approval 2008 to the present: Articulation and Concurrent Enrollment

5 PLTW @ ECC Program Progression
Milestones to Date (funded by Chevron, NGC and SB 70 94 teachers trained 12 high schools, 1 ROP, 12 Middle Schools launched 40 PTE Programs, 15 GTT Modules and 2BMS programs Two A.S. degree and certificate programs 26 HS courses articulated to community college courses. Diversity of K-12 schools served (Lennox to Palos Verdes) 30 scholarships for PLTW grads continuing to El Camino More than 2,100 HS students enrolled in PLTW courses in El Camino service area. 34% female participation in high school PTE courses. 2,000 traditional enrollment in HS PLTW courses 900 concurrently enrolled in HS for college credit (30 sections) AB-86 Career Pathways Trust, PLTW in 22 of 39 Projects

6 APET Alliance for Pre-Engineering Technology
A growing number of Community Colleges partnering with PLTW El Camino, El Camino-Compton, Cerritos, L.A. Pierce, Mt. San Jacinto and Riverside offer PLTW courses in the LA area Articulation, Dual-Credit between HS and CC gives college credit to 9th grade students. Grant partnership opportunities University College Credit (Cal Poly Pomona +) University admission benefits (SDSU, UCLA, CPP) Linkages to Industry (e.g. Chevron, Northrop Grumman)

8 Articulation Articulation Agreements HS to CC.
Teachers compare course content Substantial match required Student receives credit after they enroll in the CC. Must be renewed every 2 or 3 years. Research CC catalogs and study CC schedules Articulation Agreements CC to CSU and UC HS can not articulate directly to a CSU/UC Assist.org

9 Dual/Concurrent Enrollment
College course taught at HS by HS teacher Teacher must meet CC minimum qualification Can be co-taught by volunteer/mentor/industry person Can report for apportionment (lots of rules)(AB 288) Labor intensive for the college College must create semester outlines (ETEC 10 vs. 10A & 10B) HS students must apply every semester CC calendar may be different than HS (start/end dates, holidays) Best scenario for the student It is a plus that the student has a real college transcript It is a minus that the student has a real college transcript

10 Where Do I Start It’s All About Relationships
Economic Development Units. CTE Dean (better yet the admin). CTE Teachers/college professors. Grants office. Ask to be on their advisory committees. And ask the faculty to serve on your advisory team. Research the catalog and schedule. Go there, take a tour, show some interest. Think of it like a scavenger hunt. Share the APET model. Good things take time. This is a good thing.
