1 2014 Write-On Introduction for Transfer Students

2 CLR Time Commitment  For the Write-On  10 days, number of hours spent varies  Summer work and other commitments  Thursday, July 10, 8 a.m.– Saturday, July 19, 8 p.m.  For CLR  2 years, approximately 80 hours per semester  During 2L year, required to complete a writing requirement  You can be a part of other journals and student groups and still be on CLR !

3 CLR Write-On Clinics  We’ll provide much more specific information and tips on the Write-On process to follow!!!  Case Note  Recent Supreme Court Case  Sources all provided by CLR  Editing Packet  9 pages (taken from current CLR article)  Tools: Bluebook, CLR Style Guide, Source Packet  Personal Statement  Prompt is on CLR ’s website

4 Personal Statement Prompt CLR seeks a membership with varied backgrounds and interests. To this end, you may consider discussing how your background, life or work experiences, culture, and perspectives would contribute to the diversity of the entering class. If applicable, you may also describe any adversity that you have overcome, including discrimination, linguistic barriers, or a personal or family history of educational or socioeconomic disadvantage. Most importantly, please illustrate how any of these relevant factors affect the way you think about legal scholarship and the ways you can uniquely contribute to the work and community of the California Law Review.

5 “What I Wish I Had Known Before the Write-On”  Complete journal work!  Volunteer for substantive work such as cite checking and bluebooking  Become familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style  Freshen up on grammar rules  Draft personal statement beforehand (this year’s prompt is in previous slide)

6 Some Final Details  Registration  Three steps: 1) Email Yvonne Chi by July 1 with your intention to participate, full name, preferred email address, phone number, and birth date; 2) Email Yvonne completed and signed FERPA Form; 3) Email Yvonne signed Honor Code  yychi@berkeley.edu (Yvonne Chi’s Contact) yychi@berkeley.edu  Packet Pickup / Submission  Packet distribution is all electronic  Case note, personal statement, and scanned copy of editing packet submitted electronically  In addition, original + 1 copy of editing packet must be mailed in or hand-delivered
