10 THE NEED FOR A BRACHYTHERAPY CENTER The radiation dose delivered by Brachytherapy is CRITICAL in curing patients of cervical cancer and has been the standard of treatment for over 100 years. Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012 5

11 WHY THE URGENCY? Until recent, cancer awareness among Nigerians has been very low With renewed interest by corporate bodies in areas of public enlightment and awareness campaigns, more people are beginning to get tested and we expect the numbers to go higher In Nigeria, a country with over 150million people, there exist only one(1) Brachytherapy centre located in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, western Nigeria and Donated by IAEA. Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012

12 WHY THE URGENCY? This centre is currently flooded with patients hence the need to create a new centre accessible to cervical cancer sufferers all over the country. Lagos state is the former capital but still remains the commercial capital and the nerve centre of Nigeria and home to over 18million people. Lagos state is home to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, a foremost Government owned tertiary institution. Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012 6

13 WHY THE URGENCY? Lagos University Teaching Hospital diagnose lots of cervical cancer patients weekly, they are all turned back due to a lack of facilities or referred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan which is about 150km from Lagos For those that can afford the treatment at the University teaching Hospital Ibadan, cost is further increased because sufferers will have to cater for personal needs like hotel bills and sundries.
