2 2 Global Cancer Burden Cancer is a global epidemic and a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 7.6 million deaths or around 13% of all deaths in 2008. Worldwide, cancer now causes more deaths than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. More than 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

3 This is for title This is for text Center for Global Health At-a-Glance The NCI Center for Global Health (CGH) was established in 2011 to: o Support NCI’s goal to advance global cancer research o Build expertise and leverage resources across nations to address the challenges of cancer o Reduce cancer deaths worldwide Center Director: Dr. Edward Trimble CGH collaborates with: U.S. government agencies Foreign governments Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies CGH and the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which seeks to advance the mission of NIH internationally, work together closely to coordinate international partnerships and activities 3

Mission The mission of NCI’s Center for Global Health is to create sustainable international partnerships, support programs that address global gaps in research and scientific training, and disseminate information and best practices that drive improvements in cancer research and cancer control. 4

13 Cancer Control Plan Awareness – Cancer is a critical health issue – Majority of cancer deaths in women occur in low-middle income countries, not among the rich Prevention – Common risk factors-tobacco use, unhealthy diet, excessive alcohol consumption and lack of physical activity Diagnosis: – Priority for early detection and diagnosis when cancer is at a treatable and potentially curable stage Treatment – access to affordable, effective drugs and vaccines, and to palliative care
