5 ENERGY Timeclocks/powersavers Energy efficiency review (Capita work) Energy efficiency spend in Science Buildings (actioned in March - £400K spent) Combined Heat & Power network feasibility consultancy with Leicester City Council Big Green Week – energy saving following the Big Switch-Off on the weekend after = £2000

6 WASTE New recycling scheme Battery Amnesty – battery containment Negotiations with water analysts currently ongoing (find areas of overpayment, reduction possibilities) WATER

7 THE RECYCLING SCHEME 3,147 bins delivered to date to approximately 40 buildings All academic buildings included on 3 main campus sites Approximately 600 hours of volunteer time given for delivery of the bins 50% recycling rate from buildings with bins - shown in February 2008 – even top green Uni’s are only achieving around 40% overall Cambridge – 29%; Derby – 12%; L’boro – 8%; DMU – 6%* GO Green P&P figures from 2007

8 BIODIVERSITY/LAND MANAGEMENT Some contact with Brian Arnold – review needed Advice on the planning and design of projects e.g. new Management Training Centre and sports facilities have many green features embedded in the design Attend Estates project meetings CONSTRUCTION/REFURBISHMENT

9 TRANSPORT Draft Travel Plan Framework approaching sign- off and soon will be circulated Examples of better procurement only anecdotal at this point e.g. some more local, organic and fairtrade food led by Catering PROCUREMENT

10 UoL Fairtrade Committee set-up Student-led Green League table drew attention to the green agenda in Universities Ethical Investment Policy questions featured as part of the current Green League table SOCIAL ISSUES

11 Recognition So Far Big Green Week – featuring in many UoL publications and national University press Sound Impact Awards – Alex Smith to explain Shortlisted for Green Gown Award Recognised for our ‘Positive Contribution to the Environment’ by the Leicester Environment Partnership Best practice conferences on Big Green Week and the Recycling Scheme Second best University (62.1%) in East Mids through BitC Environment Index process completed in Dec East Midlands News feature
