1. October 5, 2010 Dear Alumni: On June 18, 2010, the Ohio State University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to establish the unified College of Arts and Sciences. The College replaces the five separate legacy colleges of the arts and sciences: arts, biological sciences, humanities, mathematical and physical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. Among the many benefits of this unified structure is that it facilitates increased collaboration and reduces areas of duplication and overlap. To mirror restructuring of the College itself, I convened a task force consisting of representatives from the five legacy college alumni societies. Over the last few months, the task force has worked diligently to develop a charter and structure for the new, unified Arts and Sciences Alumni Society and to design the application processes for officers, board members, and committee volunteers. The new alumni society will design and implement programming that offers opportunities for fellow alumni to engage with each other, to connect with the university, and to interact with and support current students to build a strong pipeline of future alumni. In addition, the board will act in an advisory capacity to the executive dean. The hard work accomplished by the former societies will be a springboard for the new, unified alumni society. Indeed, the best ideas will be retained and replicated. There will be general interest offerings, like the tailgate and the golf outing, as well as niche programming for the benefit of small groups of alumni and students. I hope that you will become engaged with the college by participating on one of the unified Society committees or by applying to join the unified board.
