10 What this means for our students Approximately 93 per cent of our 1,400 academic staff perform teaching and research in fields rated world standard or better. Most leading researchers teach – in fact many of these are our best teachers. All academic staff are expected to engage in some form of scholarly activity. This exposes students to leading research currently underway – the results of which will be in textbooks in several years time. Research-led teaching is the fundamental difference between a research university and a teaching institution. Vice Chancellor’s Research Excellence Award winners 2010
