Integrating LCA into Building Design and Retrofit Processes Sarah Russell-Smith Research Group Meeting August 25, 2010

The Plan The goal is to delve into: 1.Mathematical Tools for Data Analysis 2.Life Cycle Impacts of Commercial Buildings 3.Useful/Meaningful Metrics for Analysis Case Studies: 1.Y2E2: Retrospective New Construction Project 2.GSA Border Crossing Complex: Prospective New Construction Project 3.TBD: Retrofit Project Sarah Russell-Smith

Requirements for Case Studies Past Data & Future Monitoring Planned Access to Building Managers & Engineers Plans available Digital bidding and as-built documents and BIM model help Similar Size (~100,000 sq.ft.) Same climate Same type of building (office) Additionally for Next Case: Retrofit Planned Sarah Russell-Smith

Y2E2 1.Acquired building documents from Stanford Maps & Records (PDF and DWG files) 2.Attempted to create 3D Revit model (but files are only 2D) 3.Spoke with Arup and Hathaway-Dinwiddie – no 3D model for Y2E2, but 4 th building is mirror image, awaiting material inventory 4.Created Excel spreadsheet listing materials (Thanks Jeff!) Sarah Russell-Smith

Y2E2 – Next Steps 1.LCI - Identify matching SimaPro material and quantify material take-offs 2.Analyze Sensor Data for Use Phase Energy Consumption 1.Review work from CEE243 (2009) class 2.Explore Algorithms to Reduce Data Intensity 3.Complete Process – Reduce data without compromising accuracy 3.Data Analysis of Design Process 1.Work backwards from complete model, taking away information to replicate decisions that were made 2.Analyze how decision process worked and possible improvements 4.Determine “Best” Metrics 1.Tie LCA to Data Analysis Sarah Russell-Smith

GSA Border Crossing 1.Met with Peggy Ho Yee from GSA to discuss research plan 2.Spoke with Anh Nguyen (GSA), Craig Curtis (MillerHull), Drew Gangnes (MKA) 3.Project Details: 1.Border crossing complex near San Diego 2.Campus of several buildings, highway 3.2 main buildings connected at basement, 3-story office buildings, mirror images of each other to be built in separate phases 4.Currently finishing proposal for GSA 5.Goal: Development of a framework and computational architecture to enable building designers, engineers, contractors, owners, managers, and users to quickly, reliably, and efficiently construction a dynamic life cycle model that quantifies the life cycle impacts associated with the pre-use building life cycle through computational links with existing 3D architectural modeling tools, 3D structural analysis software, 4D virtual design and construction packages. Use phase life cycle impacts will be quantified using on real-time building performance data gathered from distributed sensor networks. Sarah Russell-Smith
