1 US History Flashcards

2 Resources All the things in a place that people use to help them live.
Some of the resources I have in my home are food, water and clothes.

5 Migrate To move from one region to live in another.
People migrate for many reasons including, lack of food, jobs or safety.

6 Settle Moved into a place; made a home there.
People settle in a region because there are enough resources to live.

8 An event held at a special time to celebrate an important event.
Ceremony Native Americans used ceremony to celebrate a new leader or a marriage.

9 A scale is a tool on a map that allows you to measure distances.
I used a scale on the map to figure out the distance from NY to California.

10 A physical map shows land features, such as rivers, mountains, weather, deserts and lakes. It shows how high or low something is (elevation). Physical Map I used the physical map before I went hiking to see how high the mountain is.

11 A political map shows borders, states and regions
A political map shows borders, states and regions. It will also show the weather and the economy of each region, the location of major cities and major geographic features, such as a river. Political Map To see which states Barack Obama won during the election, I used a political map

12 Goods Things for sale, such as silk, spices, food, etc.
At the food store, I bought the following goods. 12

13 Trade Route Paths or waterways traders travel to buy and sell goods.
During Medieval times, people traveled the Silk Road Trading Route to buy silk and spices from China. 13

14 Empire A group of land, countries or people run by one government.
England used to be an empire because it controlled land and different people all over the world. 14

15 Colonies Areas that are ruled by another country
England built colonies in the North America after claiming the land 15

16 Claim Saying land is yours and/or taking land from someone else.
England claimed the land of the colonies for itself. 16

Merchants I buy food from the food merchants on Broadway

A way that countries make money. Countries use the resources in colonies to make and sell more goods than they bought. Mercantilism England’s mercantilism involved making and selling North American cotton into clothes.

19 The people in government who make decisions for the people who elect them
Representative Many people are represented by Charlie Rangel, who is the representative for the North of Manhattan.

20 A government that gets its power from the people, not from kings or from force.
Self-Government Voting for our leaders, like President Obama, is how we have self-government.

Sectionalism On a political map, the US is divided into different sections according to who people want to represent them.

Slave Trade European countries would kidnap people in Africa and sell them as slaves in North America

24 Taxation is when a government collects money from the people to pay for goods and services. Paying taxes almost always causes conflict. Taxation Some things paid for with taxes: War Public Housing Garbage collection School Parks Roads

25 Propaganda is ideas or information purposefully spread to help or hurt a person or group.
When two groups go to war, they often use propaganda against each other.

Declare The Colonists declared their independence from the British

Patriot John Adams was known as a Patriot because he fought for independence

Treaty At the Treaty of Paris, the British and Americans agreed to end the war and give the colonies their independence.

Legislature The legislature for the federal government is called Congress.

Federal Government The Federal Government is headed by the President.

Judicial Branch It is the job of the judicial branch to make sure that what the President and Congress does is allowed under the Constitution.

I guarantee that if you come to class everyday and complete your work, you will pass this class.

39 The power of the courts to determine whether or not something that the US has done has broken the laws found in the Constitution Judicial Review The Supreme court has the right to use Judicial Review to make sure that what Congress does is Constitutional.

Foreign Policy The foreign policy of the United States towards Great Britain (England) is one of support.

48 A bank is a company that makes money by lending money and then charging a fee (a.k.a. interest) when that money is repaid. Bank Banks are important to an economy because it allows people to buy things like cars and houses which they could not afford without borrowing

49 A tariff is a tax that is charged on goods that are imported into the US.
The purpose of a tariff is to encourage people to buy goods made in America rather than goods made in other countries.

Union The Teacher’s union protect Jason and Ari from being fired for no reason

A tool a union can use to get better pay or working conditions. Union members will refuse to work for a company until they agree to what the union wants. Strike The transit workers union went on strike four years ago for better pay. The subways and buses were shut down for three days.
