2 February 14, 2013 Title: Coasts Introduction Keywords 1.Coast – The stretch of land where the land meets the sea. 2.Coastal processes – Any natural activity at the coast that is changing the coastline. 3.Sub-aerial processes - Sub-aerial processes are those processes above ground/on land that may affect the landscape. 3 Why do we love the coasts? It’s warmer The beach For boating For fishing © Dwight Sutherland 2013 Importance of the coasts 1.Coasts make up 10% of the world’s land surface 2.44% of world’s population live within 150km of the coast; that’s just over 3 billion people 3.40% or world’s population live within 100km of the coast; that’s 2.8 billion people 4.Major coastal cities are Miami, Shanghai, Lisbon, London, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, New York, Los Angeles etc 5.Major industries at coasts are tourism, banking, farming, shipping, factories etc.

5 What are the main coastal processes shaping the coast? Weathering – The breaking up of rocks into smaller pieces. Mass movement – The sudden movement of material usually downhill. Erosion – The wearing away of rocks that have been weathered. Transportation - The movement of material from one place to another. Deposition – The laying down of material. © Dwight Sutherland 2013
