The Dilemma Known as Rape Simrat Giran

“Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary.” –Mahatma Gandhi

The problem The number one root of rape culture in India is the Indian culture that exists there now The mentality of the men and there attitudes towards women, mostly the lack of respect for women Politicians doing little or negatively affecting the prevention of rape or rape culture

The Culture The way women are treated can be seen in movies that depict the reality of Life in India The movie, Gangs of Wasseypur, depicts the negative manner in which men treat their own wives This treatment of women shows the lack of respect men have and how it is cemented in Indian culture.

The numbers Between 2007-2011 there was an average of 22,000 rapes per year The annual rape rate has increased in that time span as well The majority of rape victims are between 18- 30 years old There is only a 23% conviction rate compared to the 77% acquittal rate

The Government The Indian government has created many mandates and laws in order to suppress rape These laws are not enforced enough by politicians which is not allowing for the dilemma to extinguish Politicians actually cast doubt on the seriousness of rape allegations

How does Indian culture influence men to rape women? Men grow up with their fathers and other men around them treating their mothers and other females with no respect There are no laws that are enforced which give incentive to men who rape women, knowing they will probably not receive punishment Women are afraid to speak as the dominant male society suppresses them

Politicians in India do not enforce these laws that are created to prevent rape or even help rape victims Some politicians even attempt to diminish the significance of rape and refuse to accept rape as a dilemma, causing progress to be withheld

The solution Education!!! By educating the youth of India, it is possible to change the culture that affects the mentalities of children who adopt the negative values of Indian culture and eventually become rapists. Eventually education will lead to politicians who will enforce laws to extinguish rape. The change of culture needs to be shown in movies as well, the culture needs to be altered for the youth to progress with the proper respect for women.

In conclusion… Rape culture is a dilemma in India that can be fixed. By educating the youth of India it is possible for rape to extinguish as there will be men who have respect for women. Politicians also hold great power and if used correctly, they can greatly influence the number of rapes that are committed and the number of rapists who are allowed to be free.
