2  As defined by the World Health Organization, wellness is “the optimal state of health for individuals”  This includes 5 different areas  Physical  Social  Emotional  Psychological/Intellectual  Spiritual

3 This lesson will only go over the basics of the five dimensions of health and wellness and the future classes we will dive further into each dimension.

4  One of the most important and known for athletes.  Physical wellness are the aspects of life that keep yourself in the best condition possible.  Involves…  Physical Activity  Nutrition  Moderation/abstinence from of Drugs and Alcohol  Responsible care of yourself (minor illnesses)  Important to athletes because…  You use your body  Physically healthy person performs better

5  Improving Physical Wellness  Exercise  Sleep  Hydration  Nutrition Most important aspect of athletic performance besides genes and training. Use of Pre-and Post-workout meals and snacks Have been proven to improve performance if eaten at right time.

6  In a nutshell, social wellness is simply…  Creating positive interactions  Forming meaningful bonds  Enjoying being with others  Important to athletes because…  Teamwork  Communication  Improving Social Wellness as a team  Team bonding activities Examples????

7  Emotional wellness is the ability to understand your own feelings and your capacity to manage you emotions, both good and bad to cope in an effective manner, especially with stress.  Important to an athlete because…  Deal with stress in an effective manner  Emotionally healthy= stronger performance on field  Improving Emotional Wellness  Be Optimistic  Meditate and Relax to relieve stress

8  Intellectual wellness is the continuation of expanding knowledge and skill.  Important to an athlete because…  Changes in the game  New technology and techniques that are more efficient  Allows you to be flexible (coachable)  Understand new concepts and grow skills efficiently  Improving Psychological/Intellectual Wellness  Stay open-minded

9  Spiritual wellness is using your values and beliefs in order to seek meaning in the things you do.  Not just religious spirituality.  Not particularly important for the performance of an athlete but can be if the athlete uses spirituality as a support in their performance (i.e. prayer)  Improving Spiritual Wellness  Meditate  Reflect on your actions and yourself

10  All of the dimensions include  Physical  Social  Emotional  Psychological/Intellectual  Spiritual  All of which impact athletic performance one way or another.  If a person reached their optimal health in these areas- quality of life increases.
