2 Incumbent Worker Training  Grant funding for customized training for existing businesses to assist in effectively retaining and keeping businesses competitive through upgrade skills training for existing full-time employees. On-the-Job Training  A training service that can reimburse up to 50% of the trainee’s wage rate for the extraordinary cost of providing the training and additional supervision. Labor Market Information  Provide unemployment rates, wage, education, economic, and demographic data by County, Workforce Investment Area or within the State of Tennessee. Rapid Response Services for Layoffs or Plant Closures  Help provide employers and employees information about retraining, job opportunities, unemployment insurance benefits and other local, state, and federal services during company layoffs or closures. Work Opportunities Tax Credits  Provide information regarding Work Opportunity Tax Credit. This program allows businesses to receive tax credits for hiring persons within certain target groups. Post Job Orders  TN Department of Labor statewide job bank that provides available job listings for job seekers.

3 Pre-screen applicants  Career Center staff will prescreen applications to assist employers in narrowing down the field of applicants. Recruiting Services  Provide assistance in recruiting job applicants for your business Pre-employment Testing  Pre-employment assessments are administered to assist businesses in their selection process. The assessments are objective and helps HR staff make better informed decisions in the selection of new employees. Interview Space  Career Centers provide space for business to use for interviewing pre-screened applicants. Job Fairs  Facilitate job fairs to provide a pool of applicants for businesses to meet and consider for employment. Green Interview  Web-based interview program that will assist businesses with pre-screening applicants, which will result in time and money saved by the company

11  Training for a group of job applicants with an employer in a specific occupation  Training funds through Career Center up to 50% of total cost for training  Requires commitment of employer to retain trainees after successful completion of training

17  Grant funding for employers to provide training to upgrade skills of current employees  Training should improve employee’s earning potential  Training will assist in keeping businesses competitive to promote growth and avoid layoffs

18 General Provisions  Private, for profits - $50,000  Private, non-profits (Healthcare) - $25,000  Must have at least 5 full-time employees  Business in operation in state of Tennessee at least one year  Businesses may use public, private or its own in- house training providers  Businesses can provide training for up to four components

19 Reimbursable Costs  Instructors/Trainers Wages  Curriculum Development  Textbooks/Manuals/Materials/Supplies  Tuition Expense  Software (as related directly to training)

20 Businesses will provide a matching contribution to the training project equal to at least 50% of the requested grant amount Employer Matching Contributions  Employee Wages and Benefits  Equipment Purchase  Travel  Lodging  Meals

21  2007-08 Training for 16 salaried staff by UT Center for Industrial Services (Leadership and Management Training) -- $17,684.00  2008-09 Training for 60 hourly staff by UT Center for Industrial Services (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen Training) -- $25,000.00

24 The National Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) is a portable job skills credential that can measure a persons ability to perform the three main functions that are required in 90% of all jobs. These functions include:  Reading for information  Applied Mathematics  Locating Information

25  The National CRC carries the signature of Governor Phil Bredesen as well as Commissioner James Neeley of the TDLWD and the state seal  On the back of the Certificate appears a list of tasks that the applicant has achieved a mastery during the CRC process  The Certificates are awarded based upon a score that is achieved using the ACT WorkKeys® Assessment

31  Maury Alliance began their search for a new president in 2009  Applicants from over 7 states submitted resumes  Career Center provided webcams and access to online interviews for top 10 applicants  Each candidate recorded interview via webcam  Maury Alliance Selection Committee reviewed interviews online at their convenience  Based upon web-cam interviews, top three candidates were brought in for live interview

32  Using Green Interview software, the Maury Alliance was able to reduce a six – eight week screening / hiring process down to less than two  Maury Alliance was also able to save time and money by using webcam interviews  Saved time for selection committee to view interviews on their own time rather than in group meetings  Saved money by using webcam interviews rather than bringing in applicants from all across the US for face to face interviews

33  AAP is designed to aid apprenticeship programs, recognized by the USDOL Office of Apprenticeships  Deliver valuable skills training for jobs in high growth industries facing skills shortages  In first two of years of AAP: Served 30 apprenticeship programs across Tennessee spending $1,350,000.00

34 General Provisions  $50,000 limit on each grant  Dollar for dollar organization/company match  An in-kind contribution is acceptable for the organizational/company match, which may include but not limited to:  Classroom space  Office space  Utilities  Training equipment (welders, electrical test equip, etc.)  Apprentice wages and travel  Food and lodging of instructors

36 An internship is a planned, structured learning experience that takes place in a workplace for a limited period of time.  Designed as “try-out” employment / work experience in field of interest  Internships may be paid or unpaid An internship worksite may be in the private for-profit, non-profit, or public sectors
