3 Québec Culture – Sports and Hobbies The climate in this region usually leads to snow from about November to April. It is because of this that many winter sports and activities are quite popular. Hockey: - 1875 McGill University students came up with the rules of this popular Canadian/International winter sport. - Montréal Canadians: The oldest established NHL franchise and one of the original 6 teams of the NHL. (Maurice “the rocket” Richard) - Québec Nordiques: Based out of Québec City, these Montréal rivals played in the NHL from 1979-1995 before moving the franchise to Colorado. - Most communities have strong hockey organizations for youth all the way to adult… it is embedded in their culture

5 Other Winter Sports - Snowmobile: Invented in Québec by Joseph-Armand Bombardier - Cross country and downhill skiing: The flat and cleared countryside gives way for cross country skiing, while the Appalachians allow fantastic downhill skiing… second only to the Canadian Rockies. - Ice Fishing: As rivers and lakes freeze quickly in this climate, small fishing shacks can be seen along water bodies from December to March. - Ice Skating: In addition to hockey skating, figure and recreational skating are also popular among communities. * Red Bull Crashed Ice – Downhill Skating!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSfXRb4W-R0

6 Carnival Since the beginning of French settlement, the habitants of New France created a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. The custom of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has long been popular. The first official edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955 Bonhomme is the official representative of this event Winter sports, snow sculptures, and activities based on the traditional Québec lifestyle, such as canoe races and dogsled races are common among the festivities http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIbjsFgewvc
