4 Riverbed: the leader in WAN Optimization
Gartner “Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization Controllers, 2013” We are a leader once again in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. With 6 years in a row as a leader in WAN optimization controllers, Riverbed stands alone in the leaders quadrant. WAN optimization is one of the key technical enablers for today’s modern network. And Riverbed for six years in a row has been identified in the Gartner Magic Quadrant as the WAN optimization leader. By overcoming common bandwidth, latency, and congestion challenges, WAN optimization maximizes application performance and end user productivity while minimizing IT expenditures and driving business efficiency that results in cost savings and business agility. In addition, Riverbed Steelhead appliances allow you to meet a rapid increase in demand from network users and scale as needed without any interruption to your business. Riverbed Steelhead is an key enabler for virtualization and the cloud as you consolidate servers from the branch to the datacenter as well as leverage hybrid infrastructures and networks for cloud services. Let’s take a look at some industry trends with Raj Gulani leading our discussion. This Magic Quadrant graphic was published by Gartner, Inc. as part of a larger research note and should be evaluated in the context of the entire report. The Gartner report is available upon request from Riverbed. 5 Businesses are more cloud aware
Changing Network Environment Changing Apps Environment Changing IT Spend 2.5X Growth in business network traffic by 2017 58% Of business traffic will be Video in 2017 $80B Private WAN Services spend Business and End-user demands are driving IT Infrastructure changes….Balance of power shifting to business stake holders and end-users Lets first look at the key market trends in WAN optimization ….and how they are impacting your organization In the big picture, there is a 2.5X growth in business network traffic. Gartner projected earlier this year that 80% of the Enterprise traffic will move to the WAN by 2014. Its clear that….Applications and data are moving outside of the traditional branch to HQ model to hybrid clouds, public clouds. Business leaders and IT leaders both have a stake in making applications work seamlessly The typical customer cases at Riverbed have 30, 40, even 50 applications. In 2011, non-windows applications exceeded windows apps in businesses. The content rich applications driving bandwidth include custom applications, disaster recovery applications and many video applications (distance learning, digital signage, perimeter intrusion detection). At the same time, social media and unified communications also need to be supported to meet business needs. From a spend perspective…IT budgets are very tight growing at 3% and in some cases less…spread across applications that are bought by business unit leaders and on cloud services. WAN services spending will be over $80B per year through 2016; MPLS, Internet VPNs and Carrier Ethernet will see more spend on Internet bandwidth to access cloud services. Cloud IT services will easily be over 100B by IT teams must establish SLAs for their existing applications but also new applications. $100B Cloud IT Services spend 80% Of traffic moves to WAN by 2014 50% Split between Windows and non-windows apps

6 Cloud SaaS usage is increasing
SaaS apps usage is increasing. When you look at ten percent of apps, 35% are SaaS apps today and 14% are planned as SaaS apps 36 months from now. When you look at more than 50 percent of apps, 6 percent are SaaS apps today, while 13% are planned as SaaS apps 36s months from now. From: Research Report: 2013 Public Cloud Computing Trends. 7 Cloud Services/SaaS creates new challenges
Cloud services/ Software as a Service (SaaS) can create new challenges for businesses, such as application latency across cloud environments. Organizations of all sizes, especially those with geographically distributed offices and users, are adopting or have adopted cloud-based infrastructure and services, such as Office 365 and Salesforce.com. This adoption has been driven by “pay-as-you-grow” economics and the ability to burst capacity as needed. One of the key requirements for successful deployment of cloud services/SaaS is ensuring a good end user experience. End user performance depends greatly on the network. Performance typically is not a function of how well the cloud service or application is designed, but more a factor of how efficiently applications are delivered to the end-user, especially across networks of various types, capacity, latency, and quality characteristics. Examples include MPLS, Internet, or hybrid networks, issues such as narrower bandwidth in Asia versus higher bandwidth in the US, or users in India accessing data that is hosted in the US. WAN Branches / Mobile Worker / CUSTOMERS Data Centers / Cloud

8 Users are further away from the data centers
London SaaS DATA CENTER Herndon Los Angeles Tokyo SaaS DATA CENTER Sydney SaaS DATA CENTER The cloud is a collection of multiple regional data centers that host apps/services. Yet these clouds are meant to serve the everyday user in every location around the world. Unfortunately, the distance between users and their applications can impair on application performance and can impact end user productivity.

9 Traversing the Internet introduces performance challenges for SaaS apps
Paris EMEA WAN Domestic network 30ms ???ms Internet IP VPN International WAN In this real world example, embracing cloud services/SaaS applications introduces performance challenges. While a typical request for an application running in a corporate-owned data center in Paris would need to deal with only 30ms of latency, SaaS apps introduce uncertainty, since the request must traverse the open public internet. Lexington (US) St Louis (US) North America WAN 110ms

10 Performance impacted by network latency
Application Access 60x SLOWER 120 sec 2 sec Much like we experience when centralizing applications, cloud services/SaaS applications don’t perform as well as applications run locally. In this example, application access across the cloud is 60 times slower. This number can increase when companies access SaaS applications across backhaul links.
