2  District courts have original jurisdiction, which is the authority to try a case for the first time.

3  For a case to go to a district court, it should meet one of these 6 requirements: 1. US is a party of case- cases in which the US is the plaintiff or the defendant. 2. Federal Question- violation of the constitution. 3. Diversity of citizenship- cases involving citizens of different states. 4. Admiralty- cases involving sea or water. 5. Patent and Copyrights- involves protected rights. 6. Bankruptcy- involving personal or corporate debt.
