4.  To the Mormon pioneers who bumped their wagons down Emigration Canyon in late July 1847, the valley of the Great Salt Lake looked like a clean slate ready to be filled with prosperity and posterity. But the land they took possession of was already full of generations of people living an abundant life. “The Indian people watched the pioneers come in… They were lying in scrub oak and bushes. I don’t know that the settlers knew they were there…but they were.

5.  Who has the right to the land? o The Natives who lived there for generations? o Or the pioneers who were seeking a better life?  What would America look like today if Native lands had NOT been taken away?

6. Food Sources  As settlers move in, buffalo become scarce. o Why?  The settler’s domesticated cattle is easy-to-get food source for Natives  Natives steal cattle from pioneers o Are they just compensating for their lost buffalo? o Or is this just stealing?

7. Diseases  Natives were not resistance to White diseases o Typhoid, diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc.  MANY Natives died o Is it the pioneers fault that they brought diseases with them? Could they have done anything to prevent it? TyphoidMeasles Scarlet Fever

8.  Natives Misunderstood Pioneers o Why have so many harsh rules? o Why farm, when you can gather? o Why build with stone? o Why have schools when learning occurs at home?

9.  Mormons Misunderstood Natives o Why abandon older members to elements? o Why leave disabled children to die? o Why sell each other into slavery? o Why not live in clean, indoor buildings?
