Paraphrase is restatement of a text or passage, using other words. A paraphrase typically explains the text that is being paraphrased. For example, "The signal was red" might be paraphrased as "The train was not allowed to proceed."

A paraphrase need not accompany a direct quotation, but when this is so, the paraphrase typically serves to put the source's statement into perspective or to clarify the context in which it appeared. A paraphrase is typically more detailed than a summary.quotation summary

Writing a paraphrase : To write paraphrase follow these steps : Step 1 : read the paragraph you choosed and understand it very well. Step 2 : search about any word you don ’ t understand and find synonyms for them. find other ways to express potentially unfamiliar information. Steps 3 : rewrite the sentences simplify one by one, and use synonyms.

Step 4 : review your paraphrase. does it natural ? does it flow smoothly ? does it contains most of the information in the original ? keep the author's essential ideas and never don't change the meaning of the original. Step 5 : at the end copy the reference information in parentheses.

Paraphrasing is a valuable skill because... 1- it is better than quoting information from an undistinguished passage. 2- it helps you control the temptation to quote too much. 3- the mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original.
