2 What is a SkillsUSA WV State Officer like?

3 Professional: The quiet professional type who leads by example!

5 Well Spoken: The charming public speaker who knows how to work with others!

6 Hard Working : The bubbly energetic student who always works hard to meet goals!

7 Academic: The student who performs well in not only CTE but also in advanced academic courses!

8 Leadership: The student who exhibits leadership in the classroom, community, and workplace!

9 SkillsUSA WV State Officers are like…… ALL OF THESE FINE LEADERS!

10 What is expected of a SkillsUSA WV State Officer?

11 They must be of good character and must represent their school and SkillsUSA WV in an appropriate manner. They must be serious about the role they seek to take on and understand the importance of being a state officer. They must be good public speakers. They must be able to think and react on their feet. They must be able to memorize and recite the emblem ceremony. They must be good students.

12 What is required of a SkillsUSA WV State Officer?

13 Attendance at SkillsUSA WV State Leadership and Skills Conference. (4-5 Days in March/April) Attendance at SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. (4-7 days in June) Attendance at all meetings and practices (approx. 10 days a year) Attendance at WLTI (4 days in Sept.) Attendance at SkillsUSA WV Fall Leadership Conference. (3 days in October)

14 What is the role of the advisor?

15 Prepare administrators for what is involved for both the student officer and the advisor. Prepare parents and other teachers for what the coming year will hold. Choose appropriate candidates Prepare candidates for their role. Provide candidates with a support system that will enable them to succeed.

16 Why is the role of the advisor important?

17 Administrators and teachers at your school/s will not understand the importance and responsibility of a state officer unless you make it clear. Your students will only be as successful as your decisions allow them to be! You can’t expect students to be dedicated if you are not!

22 If so …… Start Now! Develop a list of top SkillsUSA Members Compare your list to your school’s class rankings Eliminate any students with discipline problems Ask other advisors, teachers, and administrators to review your list. Pick the top candidates

23 Recruit! Meet with top students from your search Discuss becoming a state officer Discuss the responsibilities and requirements involved. Explain the advantages of becoming an officer. Encourage them to run for office

24 Prepare…. Create elevator speech Review Program of Work Review Theme for SLSC Prepare Campaign Materials and speech Fill out paperwork Do memory work (pledge, emblem ceremony, etc.) Give student a handbook to study Practice public speaking

25 Remember…. Your officer candidate will need your help and support before, during, and after the election! If you do a great job, you will have a great state officer! The state officer team will only be as good as the students you recruit! Your student can only be successful if you work to make sure that he/she is prepared!
