What is Community Commitment to Education? Community Commitment to Education is a partnership among Greater Lafayette Commerce, United Way of Greater Lafayette, and our three local community school corporations designed to motivate our community to engage in our students’ academic success.

Collective Impact

Read to Succeed Focus Read to Succeed places volunteers in local schools to focus on improving early grade reading skills 3 rd grade is a focal point because: Until 3 rd grade, learn to read; after 3 rd grade, read to learn “Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone's reading skill at the end of grade 3 (Slavin et al., 1994).” Phase 1-Read to Succeed

Volunteer Description The word of the day is “VOLUNTEER” What is expected of a volunteer? Volunteer one hour per week Attend training Regular attendance Follow instruction of the teacher What are the benefits? Contributing to the betterment of students in our community Developing assets for youth Creating an educated workforce for our community

Teacher Feedback “It feels wonderful as a teacher to see the community caring so much.”

Teacher Feedback “I think it’s great for people outside of the school setting to learn what is happening in the schools. A lot has changed since they were in kindergarten.”

Volunteer feedback "I love volunteering with Mrs. Huffman’s class! They are a joy and they are the best part of my week!“ “It is so rewarding to give the students encouragement. I get the impression, the way they soak it up, they really need someone to look them in the eye and smile and encourage them.” “Parent involvement is very important and that’s not here all the time. So there needs to be somebody else in that child’s life that needs to push a little and encourage.”

Volunteer feedback “Read to Succeed has been great. I love that it gets me out of my normal environment and helps me to be even more aware of the community.”

The Next Step Jamie Vollmer Vollmer’s List We have added numerous responsibilities to schools without adding a single minute to the school calendar in six decades.
