Wood is an organic materials as so will decay, in wetter conditions decay is quicker.
Varies widely by colour
Subject to movement - Warping, bowing, cupping and splitting – make them unusable
Knots make weakness but can be aesthetics
Contain more fibrous materials. Fibres are smaller and more compact and give it greater mechanical strength.
Softwoods can have lots of resins so icky. Pale yellow and also prone to bowing etc
Generally less dense than hardwoods, more prone to water damage as end grain soaks up water if not covered.
