5 Cholera investigation Report at Shashe Clinic in Beitbridge A 58 year old Morgan Moyo from (Paye) Kwatalani in Chief Chitaudze area of Beitbridge district He and wife visited South Africa – Messina on the 1st of March 2013 bought sadza and beef with potatoes and cabbage salad mixed with tomatoes and mayonnaise from a food purveyor The two returned to Zimbabwe on Saturday the 2 nd of March In Beit Bridge they stayed at Cephas Ngulube’s house ate dinner comprised of goat meat purchased from an unlicensed meat vender On Sunday 3 rd March left Beitbridge for Shashe around 1400hrs before that they also ate bananas and drank tap water

6 On Monday the 4 th he went for cattle herding The patient drank mazoe and biscuits used water from a hand dug spring to dilute the Mazoe He also drank the water from the hand dug spring He later complained about diarrhea without abdominal pains on Monday night He had 4 bouts of diarrhea during the night Watery diarrhea and vomiting started on Tuesday morning(5 th March) He was later taken to Shashe RHC already dehydrated and prostrate The RHC reported the suspect after just 10am the same day on Tuesday to the district The DMO was informed instantly (immediately within 24 hrs)

7 Action Taken The RRT visited the RHC on Wednesday morning the 6 th and observed the following: – The patient had improved through rehydration though patient was still vomiting, having diarrhea and had stomach distention – Disinfectants (HTH) were supplied from the district Management at the RHC The patient was admitted Rehydrated with 8 vacolitres of ringers lactate Ciprifloxacin as an antibiotic backup The stool specimen had been collected on Tuesday Report compiled by RRT

8 National office notified Friday after lab confirmation done by SD bioline and culture Sample sent to Harare for genotying Vibrio cholerae O1 Biotype El Tor Serotype Inaba identified and reported this morning from NMRL sensitivity to Ciprofloxacillin, Nalidixic, Cotrimoxazole, Cefriaxone Expecting full report from the Province with gaps for cholera commodities needed Lab capacitation expired SD bioline

9 Typhoid cases week 9 Harare continue to have typhoid cases and Chitungwiza 13 cases week 8 and 3 cases week 9 Chegutu in Mash. West reported 2 cases Cumulative cases 6 843 of these 142 confirmed cases 7 deat hs
