2. CHAPTER DIVISIONS Chapter Divisions Circumcision is a sign (5:1-12). Love is a command (5:13-15). Sanctification is a choice (5:16-24).

3. CIRCUMCISION – SIGN (1-12) “This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and you” (Genesis 17:10-11

4. CIRCUMCISION (1-12) God’s covenant with Abraham was the main thing. Circumcision was only a sign. Judiazers tried to make it main point.

5. LOVE IS A COMMAND (5:13-15). “ Love your neighbor as yourself.” The phrase appears nine times in the New Testament. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the LORD. Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” Lev 19:18 (From CBS Commentary)

6. LOVE IS A COMMAND For Christians, godly love is not an option; it’s a command. “Biting and devouring each other” is not an expression of godly love, and it will lead to destruction.

7. SANCTIFICATION IS A CHOICE (5:16-24) We have freedom in Jesus Christ If we live by our sinful nature, we can’t love our neighbors. If we live by the Holy Spirit, we have the ability and capacity to love our neighbor/

8. SANCTIFICATION A little girl in going to be baptized was asked how did she see herself as a sinner. Before Christ – ran toward sin In Christ – running away from sin.

9. SANCTIFICATION Sanctification is living a holy life Holy Spirit provides us with the his fruit with its nine aspects. We can enhance the fruit when we take steps to do things to help it along.

10. MOODY AND A WATER GLASS Moody showed an empty water glass “How do I get the air out of this glass”” Use a vacuum pump – glass would shatter.

12. MOODY AND A WATER GLASS Filled the glass with water and removed the air. Don’t try to take out sins one at a time. Let the Holy Spirit fill you and drive them all out.
