Camp Kaitawa By Angus Wilton

The morning started with a warm breeze as the Year 5’s headed off to Camp. Little did they now about the amazing adventures to come. Green lakes, tall mountains to climb, beautiful bush walks, falls, team races on an obstacle course, slippery caves and finally smoking fires. What a challenging week ahead.

Green Lake, such a beautiful place. I’m sure you’d love it, with it’s sparkling clear green colour. You can even see the bottom which is about 5 metres deep! With trout swimming through the ice cold water it’s probably the most amazing sight in the area around camp.

The peak of Ngamoko, about 1.1 kilometres above sea level. What a long way to walk. It took us 7 ½ hours to get the top and back to camp. But then again we waited for about 2 ½ hours because of injuries which includes 4 sprained ankles, 2 twisted kneecaps and 1 blood nose. On the other hand the chocolates and scroggin really gave us the energy.

The bush, what a lovely place to be. Ferns everywhere, trees leaves giving you a lovely cool breeze while their trunks stand tall and proud and the leaves dead on the ground give a nice crackling sound as you walk on them. Waterfalls, beautiful as the rush of water going down, down, down over the rocks, spray flying up. The falls were magnificent. The obstacle course, the final activity on Wednesday. What fun the 8 activities were, especially the swing bridge.

Yuck, mud, caves...what could be worse? I’ll tell you, nothing, It was the best day of camp and the tight squeezes through the gaps, AWESOME! Crunch, crunch, crunch. Nachos, can’t get anything better, except pasta. What fun cooking nachos on a grill on a smoking hot fire.

We had chip butties for lunch and a muesli bar. We were all happy to be heading home. I really enjoyed camp, it was really fun. It’s a shame we didn’t go swimming. I can’t wait for camp next year.
