As Described in the Past: An open and inclusive multi-stakeholder process A network of individuals and institutions A forum for shared learning and leadership... working toward the goal of sustainable forests REMINDER

2 The Roundtable on Sustainable Forests Helps the U.S. implement national scale criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable forests Provides a forum for stakeholders to suggest approaches to implement and interpret the C&I Fosters shared learning among diverse stakeholders, across multiple scales, from international to national to state, tribal, and local Encourages sharing of diverse types of knowledge and points of view Promotes increased understanding and more informed decision-making about our nation’s forests Roundtable Purpose (as described in the past)

3 The Roundtable on Sustainable Forests Self-chartered in 1999 Participants have included representatives from: Federal agencies (USFS, USGS, BLM, many others) Tribal, state, and local governments Industrial forest landowners & companies Non-industrial forest landowners Conservation and environmental groups Regional and community-based organizations Academics and other researchers Overarching Philosophy: Better Data leads to Better Dialogue, which leads to Better Decisions

4 The Roundtable on Sustainable Forests OBJECTIVES FOR THIS DISCUSSION: Develop a preliminary list of activities, projects, deliverables – what the Roundtable should focus on Go beyond generalities, be prepared to describe how the activity, project, or deliverable would be operationalized; take advantage of the unique attributes the Roundtable; make a valuable contribution to the goal of SFM. Identify self-selected champions to further develop and refine ideas, and recruit participants Theme for Day: Form Follows Function

6 The Roundtable on Sustainable Forests Proposed Process Steps after this meeting: Self-determined champion(s) further develop ideas in writing [June 1?]: Concise description of activity, project, deliverable; Describe value proposition and why the Roundtable?; Identify people and organizations willing to lead, participate, and/or needed to succeed Create a drafting group to bring ideas together into a cohesive draft work plan [June 15?] – any volunteers? Share draft work plan with RSF contact list; ask for feedback, reactions, another chance to champion [July 1?] RSF Core Group meets to discuss draft work plan and the feedback received from RSF participants [July] Executive Leadership Team (Co-Chairs) finalize Roundtable Work Plan based on feedback from RSF participants and outcome of Core Group meeting by [Sept]
