3 SeminarPresenter Power It Fundamentals of LLC resonant topology LLC resonant control is widely used in medium power converters to achieve high efficiency operation. Several design challenges must be addressed to achieve optimum operation. This session will discuss techniques for these challenges including, avoiding capacitive mode operation, optimizing dead time, and minimizing noise during burst mode. Francesco Gennaro Evolution in PFC topologies Common topologies for PFC have evolved to improve the efficiency and power factor at low loads. Analog techniques are often limited by the characteristics of the controller devices and the technique chosen. The session will discuss the evolution of the topologies and the control techniques from simple analog implementations to digital techniques with advanced control. This session will also discuss all variations of Transition Mode and Continuous conduction mode topologies that includes Single stage PFC, Fixed-off-time and, Average current mode. Gianni Vitale In-depth understanding of power MOSFET failure mechanisms This presentation will help designers understand the common failures of power MOS in various SMPS and Inverter topologies. Some guides will be presented to predict which conditions are critical and how to avoid common design issues that lead to failures. Giovanni Tomasello Concepts in digital power control Digital control of the regulation loop in power conversion offers several advantages in terms of flexibility, programmable response, and improved efficiency. The session will discuss implementation of digital control in power converters using the latest control ICs with unique PWM control architectures. Gianni Vitale Optimizing the flyback topology for efficiency and standby power Energy efficiency and idle power waste are one of the biggest challenges for engineers and our society. In this session, we will talk about ways of optimizing efficiency for low power offline SMPS and strategies for minimizing output losses at no load or zero load. Francesco Gennaro

4 SeminarPresenter Light It Primary side sensing techniques: design issues and implementation Primary side sensing eliminates optocouplers and extra components required in secondary side sensing which provides huge benefits in LED lighting applications. The session discusses the implementation of primary side sensing control and techniques to eliminate the errors introduced by the parasitic elements in the transformer and secondary side components. The extension of the primary sensing technology to non-isolated topologies such as Buck-Boost will also be presented.. Francesco Gennaro Architectures for driving high brightness LED There are so many different topologies to drive high brightness LEDs. This session will discuss how to select a suitable topology for different power levels of an LED system and different performance requirements, such as dimming, power factor, cost, etc. An innovative two stage soft switching primary side regulation topology for high power (>100w) applications will be presented in detail. Jianwen Shao Introduction to electronic drives for lighting applications and its standards LED lighting drivers come in several different configurations and the most appropriate configuration depends on the specifics of the application. This session will present an overview of different topologies commonly used in LED lighting applications and aid the designer to select the topology most appropriate for the application. Also, the most common industrial standards for LED drivers will be covered. Engineers new to LED lighting applications will learn the tools to select and specify the best solutions for their application. Jianwen Shao Compatibility challenges for dimmers New technology, such as LED and CFL lamps, causes tremendous compatibility issues with traditional triac-based dimmers. Flicker is one of the main complaints for consumers. This session will discuss the root causes of flickering. Another challenge is how to supply more power for the controller from a 2-wire dimmer. Possible solutions will also be discussed in this session. Jianwen Shao Design using on-line simulation On-line simulation tools give designers tools to quickly design power conversion and LED lighting circuits. These tools build on device manufacturers’ expertise of the circuit and application and, therefor,e speed up the design. This presentation will discuss using on-line simulations and will show a typical example. Thomas Hopkins

5 SeminarPresenter Move It Implementing sensorless field oriented control Sensorless field oriented control is becoming widely used in many motor control applications. This session introduces concepts to implement sensorless control of BLDC motors. The basics of vector control will be also be introduced and a complete implementation with a dedicated advance timer in the microcontroller and a power stage using the Integrated Power Modules will be demonstrated. Dennis Nolan Improved Reliability in Motor Control Using Intelligent Power Modules Intelligent power modules incorporate the driver and power devices in a single package. The package can also include thermal sensors that monitor the module temperature. This presentation discusses using this temperature feedback and shows a tool to accurately predict the actual die temperature so the system can be guaranteed to work within the allowable range. Giovanni Tomasello Using voltage mode for microstepping stepper motor drive The performance of the stepper motor drive can be improved using voltage mode drives, giving smoother operation and higher resolution. However, current mode drives have typically been used, since they inherently compensate for increases in the back EMF and variations in power supply voltages. This presentation discusses techniques to compensate for these variations using voltage mode drives and shows the implementation in easy-to-use controllers. Thomas Hopkins Isolated gate drivers for motor control New GAP driver technology uses magnetic coupling to provide up to 4kV isolation and high speed switching in a small IC package. The magnetic coupling allows bidirectional transmission to get diagnostic feedback from the output stage. This presentation shows implementations in motor control using the GAP driver technology and the advantages of optocoupler isolation. Giovanni Tomasello ST Lunch Keynote Future of power semiconductor technology This presentation will give a snapshot of state of semiconductors technology that is yet to come to market. Future of power semiconductor is evolving at a pace that is faster than ever in its history. Digital divide in the world of power is narrowing with introduction of digital controllers dedicated for power supply. After many years of marginal improvements, diode technology is taking a leap with new FERD technology that closes gap between diode rectification and synchronous rectification. Need for energy efficiency and phantom power reduction is leading to introduction of innovative smart power supply switchers. With IGBT based module adoption becoming a market standard, appliances are seeing an improvement in reliability and cost of design. Silicon carbide process is opening new doors for high voltage and high frequency application with introduction of >1200V switches. A very high level of view of newest semiconductor technologies will be presented in this module.
