Universal Gravitation Ol’ Izzy Baby took his 3 rd law o’ motion and ran with it! –This is where the legend of the apple hitting Newton on the head comes in! If the Earth pulls the apple, then the apple pulls on the Earth. It’s just that the Earth is SOOO much more massive than the apple that it accelerates less. m a

What affects Gravity? When small mass increases, F G ________ When BIG MASS increases, F G ________ When the distance between them increases, F G ________ Type of Relation: Increases DEcreases Direct Inverse! Linear!

Universal Gravitation Izzy said this: 1.The more massive the object, the greater the Force 2.The further apart they are, the weaker the Force –We’ll measure the distance between the CENTERS of the objects!

Universal Gravitation But wait! There’s more! There’s the Butter Gun Theory! Consider a Gun that shoots a burst of butter- the same amount every shot! At 1m away, it’ll shoot a layer of butter one inch thick that will cover one slice of bread! What if the bread is twice as far away? How about 3 times as far away? This is an example of the Inverse Square Law for Force Fields 1m 2m3 m

That konstant is true everywhere in the Universe, for any two objects, so it gets a special letter: We call it “Big G,” the Universal Gravitational Constant! And it’s a doozy!!!! Universal Gravitation

Orbits! What do you call the Force that the Sun exerts on the Earth? It’s Both! r
