PACT Implementation Conference Designing and Managing the MS Subject Matter Tasks at Notre Dame de Namur University

What did NDNU pilot last year? Pilot Courses for PACT Tasks: 1. Student Teaching Seminar, 2nd semester: ◦ Elementary Math—Full Teaching Event 2. Science/Social Studies Methods, 1 st or 2 nd semester: ◦ Elementary History/Social Science Task—Planning ◦ Elementary Science Task—Planning 3. Student Teaching Seminar, 1st semester: ◦ Elementary Literacy Task—Planning

What was successful during the pilot year? Outcomes: All students passed subtask rubrics Data on subtask scores provided insight about student performance Faculty progressively increased in their comfort level in aligning instruction with PACT tasks Student feedback used to inform changes for implementation

What was challenging during pilot year? Concerns: Increased student anxiety over PACT Student displeasure over additional MS tasks Overall faculty morale about scoring PACT Organized a mock scoring last spring to give students feedback about their performance and assist NDNU in transition from pilot to full implementation

Case Study: Science and History- Social Science Planning Tasks (I) Case Study Objectives: Embed into science/social studies methods course Re-structure course assignments to include PACT tasks Use PACT rubrics to mock score

Case Study: Science and History- Social Science Planning Tasks (II) Case Study Issues: 2 MS subtasks burdened the class Students more worried about “passing” at the expense of course objectives No course time for other important assignments Confused students not taking PACT in same course

MS Subtasks during Implementation Courses for PACT Tasks (note changes in purple): 1. Student Teaching Seminar, 2nd semester: ◦ Elementary Math—Full Teaching Event 2. Student Teaching Seminar, 1st semester : ◦ Elementary History/Social Science Task— Assessment ◦ Elementary Science Task—Assessment 3. Reading/Language Arts, 1st semester ◦ Elementary Literacy Task—Planning

Rationale for moving subtasks Reasons: Subtasks needed to be balanced out among courses and faculty Science/Social Studies Methods Course regain assignments replaced by PACT tasks Pilot data showed students needed more support in assessment as opposed to planning Student Teaching Seminar Course better suited for assessment tasks Reading/Language Arts Course better suited for literacy planning task

Conclusion Factors to Consider in Implementation: Students completing program in one calendar year and doing PACT are still stressed General feedback: current arrangement of subtasks in courses more balanced Student Teaching Seminar focus on PACT: match content standards with learning objectives and assessments Fall 2008: NDNU hosted 2 scorer trainings in Elementary Math
