L AFAYETTE R EGIONAL S CHOOL New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) 2011-2012 Test Results

NECAP SUMMARY Tests are designed to measure student performance on grade level expectations (GLE’s) as adopted by the four states, (NH, VT, RI, & ME) Tests are designed to measure the content and skills that students are expected to have as they begin the current enrolled grade

S UBJECT A REAS NECAP assesses the following elementary areas: Mathematics – grades 3,4,5,6 Reading – grades 3,4,5,6 Writing – grade 5 Science – grade 4

P ROFICIENCY L EVELS There are four proficiency levels: Proficient with Distinction Proficient Partially Proficient Substantially Below Proficient

P ROFICIENCY L EVELS First digit is the grade level Second and third digits are the numerical mean scaled score “40” is the “cut point” or lowest score for proficiency on all tests (340 would be the cut point for 3 rd grade proficiency, for ex.) Other “cut points” vary from grade to grade and level to level

A NY Q UESTIONS ? Clearly, Lafayette Regional School’s academic program is in the exemplary category. Those students who are not receiving a “Proficient” or “Proficient w/ Distinction” are being targeted for extra help in a variety of ways. Differentiated instruction, remedial math tutoring, small group work, and home/school communications are some of the strategies used to help these students. Title I and Special Education services are also in place for some of these students.

S O W HY A RE O UR NECAP T EST S CORES H IGHER T HAN M ANY (M OST ) O THER S CHOOLS ? 1. Our students come to school, eager and ready to learn. Unfortunately, that is not always the case in many schools… 2. Our teachers are very veteran educators that strive to continually improve their instructional strategies. 3. Our entire staff works hard to enrich our students’ educational experience. 4. Our parents support their children and our school as teammates to further enhance student achievement.

A ND, SAU #35 schools worked together to align our curricula to the state standards We spend a significant amount of time on preparing our students for taking standardized tests and tests in general. Teachers use the NECAP Released Items from past years in their daily instruction to better prepare our students for the upcoming tests. We also use the Terra Nova standardized tests to practice test taking skills, chart progress in national percentiles, and overcome test-taking anxieties.

D OES T HAT M EAN, W E T EACH T O T HE T EST ? Simply put, YES, We Do! (No apologies!) And, here’s why: NECAP tests are based on state standards, also called “grade level expectations” (GLE’s) Our curricula are based on those standards Therefore, this assessment matches our instruction of the curricula!

T HANK YOU ! For being a part of the community who supports education in general and our students in particular. Without the community’s continued support we could not attain such high levels of student success and achievement. We will continue to work diligently towards challenging our students in a developmentally appropriate manner in both academics and social development.
