Holiday Climatology Project and Weather Trivia By: Sarah Grana

 Web pages were constructed containing high and low temperatures, precipitation, snowfall, snowdepth, averages, number of occurrences, and fun facts for nine major holidays in St. Louis, Columbia, and Quincy.  The nine holidays are New Years, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4 th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Holiday Climatology

 To have all of the data organized into one easily accessible document.  To have something the media and public can look at and understand.  When the holiday is approaching, you can easily link the web page to the top news of the day and to social media websites. Purpose

 First, the dates for each holiday were found dating as far back as 1874.  Second, the high and low temperatures, precipitation, snowfall, and snowdepth were collected from xmACIS for each holiday in each city. The data was entered into an excel spreadsheet.  Next, the highest highs, highest lows, the lowest highs and lowest lows were picked out of the spreadsheet as well as the highest precipitation, snowfall, and snowdepth.  Then averages, percentages, and number of occurrences were calculated. Process

 After the spreadsheet was completed, a holiday template was created in CMS.  From there, a web page for each holiday was made. The data from the spreadsheet was put into tables and fun facts were created from the averages, percentages, and number of occurrences.  Colors and pictures representing each holiday were also chosen to make the web pages more appealing and fun.  Lastly, a page was created with a link to each holiday. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=holiday_climatology http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=holiday_climatology Process

 Getting around the missing data  Figuring out how far back snowfall and snowdepth went in St. Louis, and whether or not snowfall and snowdepth was accurately recorded in Quincy.  Deciding whether to include the average for snowdepth. Challenges

 Hopefully less calls about what is the chance for snow on Christmas, etc.  If calls are received about the chance of snow, etc it will be very easy to find the information.  Another way to be active on the social media pages.  Something that can be put on the top new of the day easily. What’s in it for you?

 Everything in the spreadsheet will be updated by Jason when necessary.  He will also keep up with the web pages and change anything when needed. The Future of the Holiday Climatology Project

 The weather trivia page was updated with significant events from the significant events page.  Each event was summarized and contains a link to the original page.  http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=wxtrivia http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=wxtrivia Weather Trivia

 Another way to be active on social media websites. It will be easy to copy and paste the summary and the link will already be attached.  This is something else that can be used for the top news of the day. What’s in it for you?
